Like her husband Chris, Morgane Stapleton is a Nashville lifer, a longtime behind-the-scenes songwriter who was always a better singer than anyone knew. Unlike her husband, she isn’t a star yet. Morgane was one of the greatest weapons on Chris’ great 2015 album Traveller, which has blown up huge. The two of them sing great harmonies together, and on a new song, she’s the one in the spotlight.

Traveller producer Dave Cobb has also been behind the boards on recent records by people like Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell. Next month, he’ll release a compilation called Southern Family, which includes songs from people like Isbell, Miranda Lambert, and Jamey Johnson. On that compilation, Morgane sings the nearly 80-year-old country standard “You Are My Sunshine,” with her husband backing her up. Her version of the song is a six-minute country-rock waltz, and it is crushingly lovely. Listen to it below, via NPR.
