Kim Myhr & Jenny Hval With Trondheim Jazz Orchestra – “Mass”
Jenny Hval’s experimental odyssey Apocalypse, girl is an album that I return to whenever I feel inexplicably empty. She’s a wayward philosopher of sorts, someone who can explain away life’s many complications and intricacies until that emptiness feels a little bit more comfortable. Hval’s carefully crafted lyrics about sexuality and intimacy and femininity are what first drew me to her, but the particular candor of her voice has an immediacy to it that isn’t easily overlooked. Hval partnered with the Norwegian guitarist and composer Kim Myhr as well as the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra to create a new album. In The End His Voice Will Be The Sound Of Paper was given its name after Hval and Myhr had a conversation about the particularities of Bob Dylan’s rasp. The first single is eight minutes of immersive improvisation; it’s lovely and wholly consuming if you’re in the right mood. Listen below.
