Fujiya & Miyagi – “Serotonin Rushes” (Stereogum Premiere)
Brighton-based Fujiya & Miyagi have been making far-flung, experimental electro for over 15 years now. The versatile outfit has shuffled effectively through numerous different sounds, constantly adjusting and approaching from new angles as if solving a Rubik’s cube. Whether it’s elongated krautrock freakouts, breathy electro-pop, or post-punk-tinged dance, the sounds are infectious and easy to move to. Though only four tracks, their upcoming EP 1 feels like a huge melding of all of their varying styles. The lead single and opener, “Serotonin Rushes,” is an example of the previously mentioned breathy electro-pop. The intro chugs along like a speeding train whisking through the station, moving your clothes as you stand a bit too close to the platform edge. Then it turns into a dance romp dripping with synths as David Best whispers of “Sweet serotonin rushes” repeating “I can’t get it out of my system” for a good 30 seconds before the invigorating rush ends. Here’s what the quartet had to say about the track:
We wanted to create music that was uplifting rather than concentrating on less optimistic emotions which we have done on previous records. I feel like we have tried to shed our skin in certain respects and have created something more positive.
It will be hard for you to get this out of your system too. Listen.
