Stream A Strut Records Mix Of East African 45s From The Mid-’70s (Stereogum Premiere)
Tanzanian band Sunburst were one of the country’s most revered (though short-lived) acts. Next month, 40 years after the band came to an end, Strut Records will release Ave Africa, The Complete Recordings 1973-1976, a Sunburst retrospective featuring everything the band released during their lifetime, as well as an unreleased radio session from 1973. To celebrate the occasion and to accompany the release, longtime Strut Records associate and record collector Duncan Brooker — who compiled the Nigera 70 series — created an hour-long mix made up of East African 45s that features Sunburst and their peers and contemporaries, providing for a wide representation of East African music from the early to mid-’70s. Listen below.
Ave Africa, The Complete Recordings 1973-1976 is out 6/24 on Strut Records. Pre-order it here.
