Towkio – “Tear Drop”
Savemoney is a versatile Chicago clique still steadily on the rise with the undeniable, jubilant ascension of Chance The Rapper, a maturing Vic Mensa, and the surprising Joey Purp all dropping collections of songs recently that range from solid to excellent. Even with all those colorful characters, Towkio probably has the most eclectic sound and persona of all of them, and that is saying a lot. He takes the ebullience of Chance, the newfound consciousness of Vic, and some of Purp’s gangster bona fides and blends them all, along with the sounds that bolster those sensibilities. He’s set to drop his Community Service 2 EP next week, and it’s another family affair. We’ve already heard “Playin Fair” and “G W M.” Today he comes with another single from the seven-track project, “Tear Drop.”
You can hear the soulful gospel of Coloring Book mixed with digital blips, muted boom-bap drums, and sampled choir hums thanks to Garren’s production, who was an integral contributor to Chance’s latest project. Towkio does just what the title of his EP suggests, spitting vivid, piercing bars about his city and community before broadening out to a world view for a big crescendo on the repeated refrain, “World going mad, so for that I let a tear drop.” Listen as the Chi-Town representative makes the song cry.
