Last year, Massive Attack, the ancestral Bristol trip-hop group, launched a new iPhone app called Fantom and used that app to release Ritual Spirit, a new EP that found them in shockingly strong form. Today, they’ve used that same app to share three new songs. “Come Near Me” is a muffled, skeletal piece of ominousness, while “The Spoils” is wispy and ethereal, and “Dear Friend” is reggae-addled dread. The Fantom app is built so that the music will actually change based on things like the time of day and your actual heart rate, but you can also listen to the original, non-customized versions of the tracks.
