Beach Slang – “Younger Us” (Japandroids Cover)

Seen in a certain light, Beach Slang’s entire career could be considered a tribute to Japandroids’ towering 2010 song “Younger Us.” It’s been more than four years since Japandroids released their last album, the near-perfect Celebration Rock. And in the time since, Beach Slang has emerged as our greatest working purveyors of fuzzed-out, passionate, windows-down classic-rock/punk-rock singalongs. Beach Slang also remain stuck in the whole “things were awesome when we were teenagers” state of mind, and that’s exactly where “Younger Us” is, too. So it’s not really a surprise that Beach Slang have covered “Younger Us” on the new compilation Polyvinyl Plays Polyvinyl, on which different artists from the label’s history cover one another’s songs. (We’ve already posted Deerhoof’s version of Xiu Xiu’s “Hi.”) Beach Slang’s version is a dizzy blast, and it’s entirely faithful to the original. Listen to it below, via Pitchfork.

Polyvinyl Plays Polyvinyl is out 11/25 on (duh) Polyvinyl. Meanwhile, Beach Slang’s new album A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings is out 9/23, also on Polyvinyl, and it is now streaming. And finally, read our recent cover story on Beach Slang here.
