At this point, you, discerning music fan, have probably already figured out where you stand on Dropkick Murphys, the Boston band who have been cranking out rowdy beer-punk shout-alongs for the past couple of decades. But as someone who has unreservedly loved the Murphys ever since I heard “Barroom Heroes” in 1997, I am here to tell you that 11 Short Stories Of Pain & Glory, the album that they will release in the first week of next year, fucking rules. It rules so hard. It rules more than 2013’s Signed And Sealed In Blood, the band’s last album, which also ruled.

Case in point: The band’s version of “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” a song that originally appeared in 1945, in the musical Carousel. It’s a song with an interesting life. It became a big fight song for the Liverpool soccer team sometime in the ’60s, and Gerry And The Pacemakers had a hit when they covered it in 1963. Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and a ton of others have also sung it. The Murphys, you will not be surprised to learn, cover it the way drunken English soccer fans would, bellowing out every note, and it’s fun as fuck.
