Fred Thomas – “Voiceover” Video
Fred Thomas stumbles over his words on “Voiceover” as he tries to ascribe some sort of concrete language to late-night mental backflips of confusion and inequity and failed dreams, but he ends up just building to a frustrated exaltation of horns and a frenzied list: “All those angry dad feelings, all those White Castle feelings, all those left behind feelings, those student loan feelings, those D.U.I. feelings, the phones-about-to-die feelings…” Thomas has always been great at translating these sorts of feelings into nostalgic narratives and pointed, pithy turns of phrase, but on “Voiceover,” it feels like he’s thrown up his arms and acknowledged that these feelings will always be, to an extent, indescribable: “I’m trying to scratch through to the immaculate core that gets hidden in the center of all these regular feelings,” he sings, laying out his modus operandi. The song comes attached to a new video made up of a series of looping actions. Watch and listen below, and check out our recent interview with Thomas.
