Stream Fred Thomas Changer
Fred Thomas used to lead the indie rock band Saturday Looks Good To Me, but his style has gone through some significant changes since then. In recent years, Thomas has perfected a sort of splintered-deadpan stream-of-consciousness ramble that reminds me of Jonathan Richman by way of Pavement, all filtered through the DIY aesthetics of right now. It’s a potent combination, and Thomas synthesizes all of it in ways that don’t feel remotely forced. And lyrically, it’s got some cutting stuff about growing into adulthood while staying in the underground. Next week, Thomas will release his new solo album Changer, and we’ve already posted his songs “Brickwall,” “Echolocation,” “Voiceover,” and “Mallwalkers.” Right now, you can stream all of Changer below, via NPR.
Changer is out 1/27 via Polyvinyl. Read our conversation with Thomas here.
