The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
I came really, really close to putting an Enrique Iglesias video on this week’s list. Enrique Iglesias’ video for “Subeme La Radio” just missed this week’s cutoff. I’m just saying. Enrique Iglesias made a good video. This week’s picks are below.
5. Lorde – “Green Light” (Dir. Grant Singer)
Lorde is such a strange, twitchy, singular presence. She still dances like a 16th-century witch doing rap hands, and it’s so good to have her back. Bless Grant Singer for having the presence of mind to just stay out of her way.
4. Bruno Mars – “That’s What I Like” (Dir. Bruno Mars & Jonathan Lia)
The entire concept here is so simple, so early-MTV, and I just love it. The execution is way better than anything you would’ve seen on early MTV. Everytime I watch Bruno Mars do anything, I can’t help but be impressed at what a born entertainer this guy is.
\3. The New Pornographers – “High Ticket Attractions” (Dir. Dan Huiting)
As someone who hated high school, I would not complain if this video were six hours long.
2. The Blaze – “Territory” (Dir. The Blaze)
One of the coolest things a music video can do is to give you a purely cinematic glimpse, for a few minutes, into the sort of life that you never would’ve considered. This one, with the clear love it feels for its Algerian tough-guy protagonist, is just a work of absolute beauty.
1. Leningrad – “Kolschik” (Dir. Ilya Naishuller)
An insane masterpiece of absolute mayhem and gore. I don’t know anything about the Russian lunatics who made this, and I don’t want to know. The mystery is better.
