Terrace Martin is one of the key architects of the jazz infiltration that’s been taking place in rap music over the past few years; most prominently, he was a major influence on the sound of Kendrick’s To Pimp A Butterfly. Last year the LA producer/saxophonist released Velvet Portraits, one of the 50 Best Albums of 2016, and recently shared a tribute video to the East Bay for the track “Oakland.” Now he’s back with an entire short film set to music from that album. The visual is directed by the Los Angeles directors’ collective APLUSFilmz (they’re the ones behind the fantastic videos for Schoolboy Q’s “JoHn Muir” and Isaiah Rashad’s “Free Lunch“), and features a series of vignettes exploring love and heartbreak starring Michael T. Smith, Dolly Gray, and Brinnen Thompson. Watch below.
