Avey Tare – “HORS_” Video
Later this week, Avey Tare, the Animal Collective member otherwise known as Dave Portner, will release the new album Cows On Hourglass Pond. Avey recorded the whole album on reel-to-reel tape in Asheville, and we’ve already posted the early tracks “Saturdays (Again)” and “Taken Boy,” and today, Avey has let the world hear the woozy “HORS_,” the last song on the album. And he’s also let us see the video.
Abby Portner, Avey’s sister, directed the video for “Saturdays (Again),” and she’s also helmed the new clip for “HORS_.” Like that “Saturdays (Again)” video, this one is built entirely around psychedelic farmyard imagery. This time around, the clip focuses on horses, filming them ambling around prettily while kaleidoscopic color-whirls present them in whole new lights. Here’s the video:
In a press release, Abby Portner writes:
I grew up with horses, so I wanted to make a video for this song since I first heard it at a show I did with Dave in Copenhagen two years ago. To me, this video is just about the beauty of a horse, its movements, expressions and textures. I lit the horse, Calliope, like she was on a stage, colored lights and haze to take it out of context of a normal stable setting, turn the focus to the horse as a character and make it a bit more surreal.
Some of my favorite horse movies are: Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken, The Man From Snowy River, National Velvet, Black Beauty, Secretariat, Seabiscuit, The Black Stallion, Phar Lap, A Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit, Spirit, All Roads Lead Home, Running Free, Misty, Racing Stripes, My Friend Flicka, Two Bits, and Pepper.
Cows On Hourglass Pond is out 3/22 via Domino. The best horse movie, if it counts, is clearly Gus, the 1976 Disney joint about the Yugoslavian mule who becomes an NFL kicker.
