Partner members Lucy Niles and Josée Caron have always proudly flaunted their identities: as lesbians, as stoners, and — most relevant to today’s proceedings — as Canadians. The Band To Watch paid tribute to Long And McQuade, a chain of Canadian music gear stores comparable to Guitar Center or Sam Adams, on a single earlier this year. And now they’ve covered Rush.

In a SiriusXM session sponsored by Canada’s Polaris Prize, Partner covered the iconic Toronto prog trio’s 1981 hit “Limelight.” According to the YouTube caption, “This cover is the final of three Polaris made this year that have been part of a special promotional 12″ release being given away free at select music store retailers with the purchase of Polaris nominated albums.”

Partner issued a statement explaining their choice: “We watched a documentary about RUSH and we fell in love with the band. They seem like such nice guys. It caused us to hear the music in a new way, with a much deeper appreciation. By doing the cover, we hoped to pay tribute to our newfound appreciation and to expand our horizons as musicians by learning these unique and complex arrangements.”
