Last week, we learned about the existence of a supremely powerful new band. When they were working on the great 2018 album Dose Your Dreams, Fucked Up members Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco came up with a couple of songs that, while badass, did not fit the tone of the album. So they contacted Riley Gale, frontman of Texan thrash greats Power Trip, to form a whole new band around those songs. Masterpiece Machine — the new project from Haliechuk, Falco, and Gale — are hopefully going to make more music than just those two songs. But those two songs are already pretty great.

Masterpiece Machine don’t really sound anything like Fucked Up or Power Trip. Instead, they draw on the raw, mechanistic scale of classic industrial music. Last week, the band shared their debut track “Rotting Fruit,” an absolutely majestic monster. Today, they’ve released their two-song debut EP, so we get to hear their other new track.

“Letting You In On A Secret” isn’t quite as anthemic as “Rotting Fruit.” It’s more of a low-key throb that ebbs and flows on its own schedule. But it’s still a banger, and it makes great use of Gale’s huge vocals. That guy’s not one of the best frontmen in the hardcore and metal worlds for nothing.
