“Quarantine Raves” In Manchester Result In OD Death, Rape, Stabbings
Two illegal “quarantine raves” were thrown in the greater Manchester area over the weekend, as the BBC reports, resulting in an overdose death, the rape of an 18-year-old woman, and three separate stabbings. The two events took place in Daisy Nook Country Park and in Carrington. Per police reports, there were at least 4,000 attendees at the one at Daisy Nook and another 2,000 at the rave in Carrington.
Images from the raves circulated on social media, showing crowds of people not wearing masks or social distancing. In one video, a sign reading “Quarantine Rave” can be seen. Photos from the aftermath of the event are filled with trash, which volunteers spent Sunday morning cleaning up.
In a statement, Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes said: “We are aware of two large raves that took place in Carrington and Oldham last night. These raves were illegal and I condemn them taking place – they were clearly a breach of Coronavirus legislation and guidelines, and have had tragic consequences.” Bev Hughes, the greater Manchester area’s deputy mayor for policing and crime, told BBC that those who attended the raves put “themselves and their communities in real danger.”
Mass gatherings are illegal in the UK due to pandemic restrictions. Over the last few years in the UK, illegal raves have been been on the rise before the outbreak of coronavirus as more legitimate music venues have been shut down.
