Dry Cleaning – “Scratchcard Lanyard”
Band To Watch and Best New Band alums Dry Cleaning released two EPs last year, one of which made our best EPs of 2019 list, and today they’re back with their first new single since then, “Scratchcard Lanyard,” which is also their debut on their new home at 4AD.
“Scratchcard Lanyard” is a jumble of wordplay and wired tension. Bandleader Florence Shaw sounds disaffected and scattered, singing of bouncy balls and knitting circles and women in aviators firing bazookas, as she lands on one central refrain: “Do everything and feel nothing.”
Here’s what the band had to say about the track and accompanying video:
In the search for your true calling in life, it’s easy to try so many things that you end up confused. It can lead to an enormous build-up of frustration. You may fantasise about exacting revenge upon your real or imagined enemies. Ephemeral things and small-scale escapist experiences can provide some relief!
