Nothing – “Purple Strings” (Feat. Mary Lattimore)

Luke Ivanovich

Next year, the hugely consequential Philadelphia heavy shoegaze band Nothing will return with their new album A Short History Of Decay. Frontman Nicky Palermo co-wrote and co-produced the LP with Whirr's Nicholas Bassett and recorded it at the Texas studio Sonic Ranch. It's the first Nothing LP with a new band lineup, including Cloakroom's Doyle Martin and Cam Smith, Best Coast's Bobb Bruno, and Manslaughter 777's Zachary Jones. We were very into lead single "Cannibal World." Today, Nothing share a new single that does not sound like that one.

Harp virtuoso Mary Lattimore has contributions on a couple of tracks from A Short History Of Decay, and one of them is "Purple Strings," the one new that arrives today. It's a quiet, mournful, atmospheric song, and it's got a mournfully overcome vocal from Nicky Palermo. Lattimore's harp helps build the eerie stillness, as do the strings — violin from Camille Getz, cello from Jason Adams. It honestly reminds me of OK Computer-era Radiohead, and I can't think of any other Nothing songs that had that effect on me.

Nicky Palermo goes through an intense transformation in the "Purple Strings" video, which Kevin Haus directed. Along with the new single, Nothing have unveiled the dates for their 2026 North American tour with Full Body 2, Cryogeyser, and VMO (Violent Magic Orchestra). Check out the video and the dates below.
