Guv – “Chasin’ Luv”

Victoria Prestes

Ben Cook, formerly of Fucked Up and currently of the great reactivated Toronto hardcore band No Warning, used to make solo music under the names Young Governor and Young Guv. Now, he's just Guv. Later this month, Cook will release Warmer Than Gold, his first album under that name. He's going for an early-'90s Madchester indie-dance thing on this record, and I'm pretty into the early singles "Let Your Hands Go" and the title track. Today, we get another one.

There are no breakbeats at work on Guv's new single "Chasin' Luv." Instead, it's a twinkly midtempo Britpop ballad, a but more like what you might've heard on previous Young Guv records. Here's what Cook says about it:

"Chasin' Luv" was the last song written for the record. We wanted something immediate, an instant hit in the vein of early Primal Scream, and to bring the jangle that was missing from the record, but always present in the older Guv stuff. Noah, Gavel, Matt, and I wrote and tracked it in about 20 minutes. Corey Rose from Color Green came by and laid down her drums in a single take. After everyone left, I worked out the vocals just as quickly. Everything on the song is one take, and from start to finish it was written and recorded in under an hour. It’s my favorite and the best Guv song ever made.

The best Guv song ever made! I like the confidence. Last year, I saw No Warning at United Blood, and Cook was the first person I've seen rocking a backward Kangol in many, many years. He made it look cool, too. Cook continues to rock the backward Kangol in the "Chasin' Luv" video, which Fred Joseph and Andrew Pitrone directed. Below, get a look at that video and at Guv's upcoming shows, including dates with Spiritual Cramp and Imploders.
