Will Oldham has been a prolific force on the American underground for decades, and he's not slowing down now. About a year ago, Oldham released The Purple Bird, a really good album from his Bonnie "Prince" Billy alter-ego, and did a great and surprisingly spicy interview for our We've Got A File On You series. Since then, Oldham has signed on for a role in the Boy Harsher-directed film The Lonely Woman and performed with Yo La Tengo. Now, he's got another album ready to go.
In a couple of months, Will Oldham will release the new Bonnie "Prince" Billy album We Are Together Again. He recorded the new LP in his Louisville hometown, and he started on it before going to Nashville to make The Purple Bird. Oldham co-produced the LP with Jim Marlowe. It features two members of his current touring band, flutist/saxophonist Jacob Dunkan and multi-instrumentalist Thomas Deakin, as well as musicians like Ryan McNair, Chris Bush, Erin Hill, and his brother Ned Oldham. Here's what Oldham says about the LP in a press release:
This record was made closer to the Ohio River than any I’ve been involved with since 1993’s Palace Brothers There Is No-One What Will Take Care of You. Louisville’s current-and-past vital musical community is highlighted on every song. Catherine Irwin, who sang on the BPB release Ease Down the Road, is back here on “Hey Little” and “Vietnam Sunshine.” Lacey Guthrie, Tory Fishe, and Katie Peabody, the three frontwomen of the band Duchess, sing together on the opening and closing songs, parallel odes to the beast that is fear.
Today, Oldham shares the lead single "They Keep Trying To Find You." He's in wise, tender, lyrically fascinating folksinger territory here, and he's always great at that. Over light orchestral flourishes, Oldham sings a direct address to someone who's lost in despair. Abi Elliott directed and choreographed the song's video, and she stars alongside a regal Sasquatch who's partly portrayed by Oldham. Below, you will find that video and the We Are Together Again tracklist.
