TURNSPIT – “Have A Heart”

TURNSPIT are an emerging Leeds-based duo. Aside from their names Jess Clark and George Barwick and a note in the press release about being self-produced, not much is documented about them. What is clear is their growing prolificacy. Tomorrow marks the two-year anniversary since the mysterious act (not to be confused with pop-punk group Turnspit) released their shadowy debut EP Your Heartbeat Is The Rhythm Of The Universe. Last year, they released three singles "Surrender," "Cinderella Girl," and "Ride." And today they've returned with their first single for 2026, "Have A Heart."

TURNSPIT dance at the edges of synth-pop and avant-pop. Single to single, their sound is vast and shape-shifty. There isn't an easy sound comparison; "Ride" feels like 2010s R&B, whereas "Cinderella Girl" is more new wave. Across their music I hear a bit of Chromatics, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, James Blake, and Phantogram.

Their new single "Have A Heart" is the one most likely to carry you to the dance floor. Its eerie, but propulsive. Airy vocals are charged with desire, longing, maybe even a bit of regret: "Come on, have a heart, What came of What had been." The words waft over a steely melody and chattering percussion. There's something chilling and refreshing about it.
