On last year's Surgery And Pleasure, the Boston indie band Vundabar pulled in elements from all over the alt-rock spectrum, landing on a punchy, effervescent post-punk/new wave aesthetic that still left room for power ballads like "I Need You." The record was pretty poppy in spots, but I don't think I've ever heard them lunge for radio-readiness quite like on their new song out today.
"Death Punch" is our first preview of the deluxe edition of Surgery And Pleasure, which is dropping in March with five bonus tracks. It's a bright, chipper, danceable track that reminds me of the post-MGMT era, when songs like "Pumped Up Kicks" and "Safe And Sound" and "Tongue Tied" were popping off. The chorus involves the phrase "five finger death punch," which is confusing given that there's been a metal band called Five Finger Death Punch for two decades now.
Goood.Dylan directed a boxing-themed music video for "Death Punch," which you can watch below.
The deluxe Surgery And Pleasure is out 3/6 on Loma Vista. Pre-order or pre-save it here.
