Congratulations are in order for the Dalai Lama, who just won his first Grammy. The Tibetan spiritual leader released Meditation: Reflections Of His Holiness The Dalai Lama in August last year, and it earned him a nomination for Best Audio Book, Narration, And Storytelling Recording, which he won.
The Dalai Lama was up against Fab Morvan for You Know It's True: The Real Story Of Milli Vanilli, Kathy Garver for Elvis, Rocky & Me: The Carol Connors Story, Ketanji Brown Jackson for Lovely One: A Memoir, and the Grammy's own host Trevor Noah for Into The Uncut Grass.
His Holiness shared this statement:
I receive this recognition with gratitude and humility. I don’t see it as something personal, but as a recognition of our shared universal responsibility. I truly believe that peace, compassion, care for our environment, and an understanding of the oneness of humanity are essential for the collective well-being of all eight billion human beings. I’m grateful that this Grammy recognition can help spread these messages more widely.
Back in 1990, Milli Vanilli won Best New Artist at the Grammys only to have the honor revoked after it was revealed they didn't sing on their debut album, Girl You Know It's True. Now instead of winning, Fab Morvan lost to the Dalai Lama.
Meditation: Reflections Of His Holiness The Dalai Lama features Rufus Wainwright — who accepted the award on behalf of His Holiness — as well as Maggie Rogers. Producer Kabir Sehgal also accepted the award on behalf of His Holiness.
