Fontaines D.C.’s Grian Chatten Covers Massive Attack And Collabs With Lankum On Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man Soundtrack

The Paykay Fookin' Bloyndaz! They're fookin' back! Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight's extraordinarily entertaining Netflix show where Cillian Murphy played the guilt-stricken head of a Birmingham crime family in the early 20th century, aired its last season in 2022. Next month, the series will return with a new one-off Netflix spinoff film, directed by Tom Harper and written by Knight. Plenty of the show's original characters are dead, but Murphy is back as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, and the cast also includes folks like Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, Barry Keoghan, and a returning Stephen Graham. As with the series, people have taken care to ensure that the movie will have an interesting soundtrack.

Peaky Blinders was always set to anachronistic cool-guy music, with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' "Red Right Hand" serving as the theme song and with songs from people like PJ Harvey, the White Stripes, and the Arctic Monkeys getting needledrops. The show was on before Fontaines D.C. really took off, but they're the kind of band who would've fit the show's vibe perfectly. So it's not exactly a surprise that Fontaines leader Grian Chatten is all over the Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man soundtrack, especially considering that he and Cillian Murphy are mutual admirers. Grian Chatten and Cillian Murphy seem to be mutual admirers. The two of them did a recent BBC interview together, and Murphy claimed to be "just a groupie."

Past Peaky Blinders composers Antony Genn and Martin Slattery are back to score The Immortal Man, and they've got a ton of collaborations with Grian Chatten on the soundtrack, including the nicely broody new single "Puppet" and a cover of the Massive Attack classic "Angel." (Irish band Girl In The Year Above are also in there with a version of Massive Attack's "Teardrop.") On top of that, Chatten teams up with Lankum for a new version of their song "Hunting the Wren." Fellow Massive Attack members Carlos O’Connell and Tom Coll make contributions, as do Mclusky and Amyl & The Sniffers leader Amy Taylor. Nick Cave recorded a new version of "Red Right Hand," too.

Below, check out Grian Chatten, Antony Genn, and Martin Slattery's new song "Puppet," as well as the Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man trailer and the soundtrack album's tracklist.
