Turnstile don't play a lot of cover songs. Early on, they would whip up crowds by playing canonical hardcore anthems from bands like Bad Brains and Minor Threat, and Setlist.fm says that they did the King Nine intro, a recent NYHC classic, a few times in 2023. Turnstile toured Australia back in January, and they stopped by the Australian radio network Triple J to take part in the video series Like A Version. For their appearance on that series, they busted out a cover that's nothing like what they've done before, taking on the Stone Roses' soaring 1989 classic "I Wanna Be Adored."
In a Triple J interview, Turnstile frontman Brendan Yates said that "I Wanna Be Adored" is one of his favorite songs, while guitarist Meg Mills said that it felt like a good time to pay tribute to the Stone Roses, especially in the wake of Mani's passing. Turnstile played their cover pretty straight, and I could hear real similarities between that song and their own more melodic recent stuff. They brought real muscle to the crescendo, too, which was cool. Below, watch Turnstile's "I Wanna Be Adored" cover, as well as their live-in-studio version of the Never Enough track "Sunshower" and the original Stone Roses video.
In other news, Turnstile got a prominent "Magic Man" needledrop on the season finale of Industry on Sunday night. On Saturday, the band attended the Brit Awards in Manchester, the Stone Roses' hometown, where they were nominated for International Group Of The Year. (Geese won.) Here's Turnstile on the red carpet:
On Friday, the Foo Fighters played Manchester, and Dave Grohl dedicated "My Hero" to Turnstile.
Also! Former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert recently started a new Baltimore hardcore band called the S.E.T., and their debut EP Self Evident Truth comes out on Friday. But after Ebert made a bunch of inflammatory social media comments about Turnstile, the S.E.T. kicked him out. Now, Ebert has another new band. He's teamed up with Bobby Faithful and Ben Rogers for a new project called Experience, and they say that they're going to Nashville to record an EP with Sean Small. They've posted some practice videos on Instagram.
