Britney Spears has been arrested for suspicion of DUI, TMZ reports. The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. last night in Westlake Village in Ventura County when the singer was apprehended by California Highway Patrol.
Spears, who lives in Thousand Oaks, was taken to a hospital for blood testing and later booked around 3 a.m. this morning. Ventura County Sheriff's inmate records show she was released from jail around 6 a.m., and she is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
She had been swerving from lane to lane on Interstate 101 in her BMW 430i before being pulled over. After showing "signs of impairment," Spears was given a series of field sobriety tests. Per CHP she was arrested for "driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol," but blood tests are still pending. A source tells TMZ that Adderall pills, reportedly obtained by Spears in Mexico, are being tested.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” a representative for 44-year-old Spears says in a statement. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."
Last fall Spears issued some lengthy social media statements in response to allegations made about her in her ex-husband Kevin Federline's new memoir You Thought You Knew. Federline accused Spears of erratic and dangerous behavior, including cocaine use, around their two sons. "I know his book will sell loads more than mine," the pop star wrote. "If you really love someone then you don’t help them by humiliating them."
Spears published her own memoir The Woman In Me in 2023, which did not paint her ex boyfriend Justin Timberlake in the most flattering light. A few months after that book's publication came Timberlake's own infamous DWI arrest in the Hamptons in June 2024; earlier this week, he sued to stop the release of the bodycam footage of his arrest, arguing that releasing it publicly would constitute an invasion of his privacy.
Though she's come under fire for unsafe driving habits before, this is Britney Spears’ first arrest. Meanwhile her once very active Instagram account has now been taken down. Late last year Spears sold her music catalog to Primary Wave.
