There have been plenty of issues with the dark teen drama Euphoria, but music wasn't one of them. Last July, Labrinth, the mastermind behind the show's soundtrack, announced that he was collaborating with the great Hans Zimmer for the forthcoming third season. Things seemed good! Now, it seems things are very bad.
Last night the the Columbia-signed musician posted on social media some tense words: “Fuck Columbia. Double Fuck Euphoria. I’m out. Thank you and good night.” The post comes a couple months of after he released his latest full-length Cosmic Opera Act 1 via Columbia.
A few years ago, things seemed all right. In an interview from 2022, Labrinth discussed the free reign he's had on Euphoria, with Sam Levinson encouraging him to do whatever the hell he wanted. “The main approach with most of the music on the show is Sam is like, ‘Lab, just make what the fuck you’re making. Don’t let no one get in the way of what you’re making, just do what you do.’ It’s like he’s going to a record shop, and I’m the record shop,” he said. “Especially being in the music industry, sometimes you can feel pushed to do something that people are expecting to hear, whereas Sam’s just like, ‘I want to hear the weirdest shit in your hard drive.'” It seems that's not the case anymore.
Who knows what this means for the fate of the show's soundtrack? It was one of the truly great things about the show.
Also yesterday, Labrinth hosted his first Twitch stream, where he seems to play a lot of his music and mess around in the studio.
?A makeup artist who worked on @euphoriaHBO has commented in support of Labrinth’s recent post:
