Brennan Wedl Signs To ANTI-, Covers Kathleen Edwards With Waxahatchee

Daniel Topete

We named Nashville singer-songwriter Brennan Wedl an Artist To Watch two years ago, and ANTI- Records agrees. Wedl has become the latest member of the indie label's illustrious roster. The connection comes as no surprise given that Waxahatchee's Katie Crutchfield has been hyping Wedl up for years, and her sister/bandmate Allison does A&R for ANTI-.

On that note, Wedl is opening for Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman's co-headlining solo tour, and they have a new song out together to coincide with the news about her label deal. Last spring, while opening for Wilco, Waxahatchee welcomed Wedl to the stage in Nashville to cover Kathleen Edwards' "Six O'Clock News." They've now released a studio recording of that cover, produced by Katie Crutchfield and Brad Cook. It sounds more like a Waxahatchee song than a Brennan Wedl song, which is also unsurprising given the personnel.

Here's a quote from Wedl about the cover:

I first heard "Six O’Clock News" on the Cities 97 Sampler CD around 2003. There’s no doubt that this song shaped my songwriting voice. Originally written by Kathleen Edwards, “Six O’Clock News” is a story about the hysteria of gun violence in an American town. To record and sing this very contemporary story with Waxahatchee over twenty years later is a direct link to the very heart of why I play music. It’s an honor to be joining the ANTI- roster and I’m ecstatic to share what we’ve been working on."

Edwards shared a statement too:

I absolutely love this so much and am humbled that my song gets to live a new life with Katie and Brennan. 25 years ago, my audience looked a lot different than theirs does today - it’s incredibly cool to see young women love the songwriting that means so much to me, too.

And sure, why not a quote from Katie Crutchfield too:

Brennan and I really bonded over our mutual love for Kathleen Edwards's music. It’s such a powerful song with timeless appeal and I'm just thrilled to get to release our take on it.

According to a press release, Wedl and Waxahatchee will be performing this song and other collaborations on the upcoming tour. Listen below.
