With a lot of indie rock records these days, you might feel like you've already heard the entire damn thing by the time it comes out. We're getting used to seeing bands drop four or five advance tracks during their rollouts, and that can seriously mess with the feeling of dialing into a new album for the first time. But that's not the case with Weird Nightmare because Weird Nightmare songs are singles. It's not about the scope of a full LP. It's about the sugar-shock sha-la-la immediacy of those hooks. Don't hold back from listening to those new Weird Nightmare songs. It's like ignoring the candy you've got in your kitchen cabinet. You already know you're going to eat it anyway. Just enjoy it.
Weird Nightmare is the solo project of Alex Edkins, formerly the frontman of METZ and currently one half of Noble Rot. As Weird Nightmare, he makes catchy-as-fuck power-pop, and he's extremely good at it. Next month, he'll release his new album Hoopla, which Edkins co-produced with Spoon's Jim Eno. We've already posted his singles "Forever Elsewhere," "Might See You There," and "Pay No Mind." All of them rock.
Today, Edkins has another new track, and this one rocks, too. It's called "Where I Belong," and it's not a Linkin Park video. (That's "Somewhere I Belong," and Edkins would probably prefer that I not bring it up.) In the boy wonder-directed video, we see Edkins performing in what may or may not be a Burlington Coat Factory after-hours. I would highly encourage you to check it out below.
Hoopla is out 5/1 on Sup Pop, or Dine Alone in Canada.
