Upstate NY duo Babehoven are releasing their third studio album I See Them, I See Me next month. They've already released the singles "Lasagna" and "Blue Around You." Their new single, which dropped today, chases a different hue. It's called "Three Reds."
Sometimes it feels like Babehoven's music is made of soft magic, transforming heavy concepts into playful ideas. "Three Reds" is no different. It's a bouncy folk song that details a game that Babehoven plays on the road. Its lyrics also twist together marks of infinite past lives, and the album's title.
I particularly love the opening verse that goes: "There is life in many places/ Dig a hole, find the traces, there are markings on the stone and now they’re gone/ And when you see them by the grave you read their names, see the dates/ You know they’re gone." It handles death with a lightness, paying homage to the energy that came before us and will continue after we're gone.
"’Three Reds’ is inspired by a game we play on tour — we gain points by counting cars of the same color passing by,” Maya Bon explained in a press release. “The song plays with synesthesia and the tension between concealment and exposure, sitting with the idea that we are made of the same stuff as everything that came before us, and how that can feel like both a warning and a celebration at the same time.”
