Last-Minute Coachella Addition Jack White Talks AI, Artemis II, Poetry, Upholstery, And His Late Mother On Colbert

Jack White played SNL with Jack Black over the weekend, performing his two new songs, and he stuck around New York to be Stephen Colbert's guest Monday on The Late Show. After an appearance from another musician, Dogstar's own Keanu Reeves, White sat down for a wide-ranging 15-minute chat with Colbert.

But before we get to that, some breaking news: White has been added to the lineup for Coachella's first weekend. The set times are now live, so we know that this Saturday, he'll open the Mojave tent at 3 p.m. PT before sets by Fujji Kaze, Royel Otis, Taemin, PinkPantheress, and Interpol. Condolences to the small-font acts who now have to follow a Jack White performance, but congrats that they can always say Jack White opened for them. There's no word yet as to whether White will perform on Coachella's second weekend.

As for The Late Show, Colbert's conversation with White touched on the soullessness of AI, the incredible human achievement of NASA's Artemis II mission, and how White's upholstery background informed his upcoming London art show These Thoughts May Disappear (running May 29-Sept. 13 at Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery), and White's mother Teresa Gillis, who recently died. Early on, White and Colbert discussed what it was like to be the youngest among many children; White was the 10th child in his family, Colbert the 11th. The segment ended with White reading a poem from last year's book Jack White Collected Lyrics and Selected Writing Vol 1.

It was a lovely quarter hour of television, and you can watch it below.

Reeves discussed his upcoming Dogstar tour during the end of his own appearance on last night's Late Show. When Colbert asked, "How do you like being a rock star?" he replied dismissively, "I'm not a rock star!" He was happier to answer the question, "What do you love about it?" with a simple, relatable response: "I love the writing of music, all of us kind of coming together and making the songs, and then I love playing rock."

You can watch that part of the Reeves interview below, and if you want, I've included the earlier interview segment about acting with Martin Scorsese and Susan Lucci in the new Apple TV series Outcome.
