Did you see any of the videos of the Nine Inch Noize set at Coachella? It looked fucking awesome. As expected, the show was an expansion from the mini-sets that Nine Inch Nails played with dance producer Boys Noize at their Peel It Back arena tour. The group did clubby spins on a bunch of NIN classics, with a specially designed futuristic stage set, and it's incredibly cool to hear those old songs in new ways. Before the show, NIN announced a Nine Inch Noize record on a Coachella billboard. That album is out Friday, and now we can say exactly what it is.
Nine Inch Noize is basically a live album. We didn't know that. We could've probably guessed that, but we didn't know it. NIN and Boys Noize didn't record a whole new collaboration together. Instead, they captured the extremely cool collaborations that they've been doing onstage. It's got Nine Inch Noize versions of 12 songs, plus an intro. Trent Reznor says that they were recorded "all over the place — some of it’s live, some in studios, hotels, planes, etc."
In a press release, Reznor tells the whole story of its creation, and he also shuts down rumors of another tour expansion and mentions that he's in the early stages of working on new Nine Inch Nails music. Here's what he says:
The creative fulfillment of working on the Challengers and TRON scores with Boys Noize led me to think that including him in the Peel It Back tour could be an interesting way to express NIN in more purely electronic terms live – a concept I’ve wanted to explore for some time. The result was so much fun for us we felt it was worth expanding and formalizing in some way.
On a whim I mentioned it would be cool to play a whole set as Nine Inch Noize in the Sahara tent at Coachella. Careful what you wish for…the next thing I knew we were designing a whole new show to present in the way it deserved.
There’s no surprise tour announcement – this Saturday is it. I’m taking Sunday off and excited to be working on new Nine Inch Nails music Monday – I’ll see you when I come up for air.
We recorded this album all over the place – some of it’s live, some in studios, hotels, planes, etc. We had a lot of fun revisiting these songs and hope you enjoy. Listen LOUD.
