Floating Points – “Falling To Earth”

Floating Points made another long-ass song with another orchestra. Even if the late Pharoah Sanders isn't involved, that''s something that you need to hear. The veteran UK producer Floating Points has done a lot of things in his career, but the one that stands above all others, at least to me, is Promises, his vast and powerful 2021 collaboration with Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra. So when he goes back into anything resembling that zone, I'm interested.

Floating Points' new 13-minute track "Falling To Earth" is a collaboration with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, and part of his score for the San Francisco Ballet's Mere Mortals, a show that premiered in January 2024. A new run of Mere Mortals began last month in San Francisco, with Floating Points performing live as part of it. It closes on Sunday. Later this summer, it'll also come to London and Edinburgh.

"Falling to Earth" is a nervous track. Strings and percussion chase each other, even though the whole thing feels mostly electronic. It follows Floating Points' recent single "Corner Of My Eye" and a couple of Fred again../Caribou collabs. Hear it below.
