Mallory Hawk is about to drop her debut album. Hawk, who used to front the Brooklyn band Customer and has played in Trace Mountains and M(h)aol, is back today with news of Chinook, her first solo LP. It takes its title from the helicopters that used to provide a constant hum in the military town of Fayetteville, where she grew up. Last fall's single "Felicity" is on there, and so is today's new track "Revolver."
Building steadily to a satisfying climax, "Revolver" is a '90s alternative folk-pop track with just a trace of twang, and it seems like it would have killed in the prime of VH1 and Lilith Fair alongside folks like Lisa Loeb and Sheryl Crow. Its video takes direct inspiration from that era, as Hawk explains:
I’m a student of the 90s music video with a brunette singer-songwriter in her sunny loft. I wanted to make a casual video that was just a warm day at home writing the song, which is how it went down in reality. The beginning pays homage to Alanis Morissette’s "You Learn" video, where she begins with a handstand then takes off into her day. I knew I wanted the camera to "revolve," so my friend Colin pulled together some gadgets and lights and we shot the whole video in my living room. I was dog-sitting my friend’s dogs Connie and Vinny at the time and they really stole the show.
Aldo Fisk directed the "Revolver" video, which you can watch below.
