It's been a minute since we've heard from Gilla Band, the righteous and adventurous Irish noise-rockers once known as Girl Band. Gilla Band's last album was 2022's Most Normal. Since then, guitarist Alan Duggan Borges has unveiled his experimental electronic solo project the Null Club and released his own self-titled album. Now, Gilla Band are back. They've got an absolute banger of a new single, and they'll head out on a North American tour this fall.
Gilla Band's new track "Giraffe" starts out as a grinding, sneery post-punk mud party, but it explodes into thumping industrial dance music halfway through. Gilla Band always had an electronic influence, but it's coming through especially clearly here. In a press release, frontman Dara Kiely says that his head "can be a very scattered and sometimes lonely place. Feeling unloved and finding it difficult to articulate what I’m actually thinking. The song’s outro indirectly details a kind of confirmation that affection toward me does exist. While I appreciate it, I still find that hard to believe."
