Smirk – “Abide”

Emily Vicario

We're getting a new Smirk album at the beginning of next month. Nick Vacario, the mastermind behind Smirk, recently announced Speculative Fiction alongside its lead single, "Dogs Years." Today, we get another glimpse of the forthcoming album with the release of "Abide."

"Abide" is a downtrodden post-punk track that opens with a guitar riff ringing like an alarm clock unfamiliar with the snooze button. The bassline is heavy and cynical, anchoring the song's bleak atmosphere. Its lyrics feel almost prophetic: "Help of the helpless oh, abide with me / Then we'll be, be set free / From sounds so deafening that no one hears / From this collapsing dream."

In a press release, Vicario shared:

‘Abide’ is based on an old British hymn that I reworked to be about the looming end of a long friendship. It’s about that slow drift where nothing really happens, but you can feel it fading and you aren’t trying to fix it.

The single comes with a dark-humored visual by Dan Duvall, featuring Vacario jaded and fed up with industry bullshit. Watch the video below.

Speculative Fiction is out 7/3 via Smoking Room.
