There's this series of moments in Emma Ruth Rundle's video for her new song "Enough" where she's on a rocky beach at night. (Rundle is based in Portland, which has plenty of rocky beaches, so I don't know why I immediately assumed it was Scotland. It does look like Scotland, though.) Rundle's got a light shining underneath her face, which is all chalky white, and waves smash against rocks behind her while she grins wide and twirls her hands through the air. It looks so fucking cool. A song like this deserves that kind of visual accompaniment.
The swirling, atmospheric, slow-building mood piece is the kind of thing we tend to expect from Emma Ruth Rundle, someone who is truly great at making swirling, atmospheric, slow-building mood pieces. It's the latest single from Rundle's forthcoming album These Killing Times, and we've already heard the extremely cool first taste "Powerless." The new album features contributions from musicians like Marissa Nadler, Storefront Church, and Baroness' Gina Gleason, and "Enough" benefits enormously from things like Patrick Shiroishi convulsive saxophone attack and Chelsea Wolfe drummer Jess Gowrie elliptical beat. The song sprawls over six and a half minutes, and it'll really absorb you. Here's what Rundle says about it:
"Enough" is inspired by the "Man Who Sold The World" — and in a retelling of the story of Elijah, we imagine him as an Elon Musk type figure — we ask — is not the whole world enough? We ask the many gods to unleash vengeance and carry this man away into the angry sky — piece by piece — this song is a reflection of the times we live in and is a vision for the dispensation of the billionaire class. The world belongs to all beings.
