Some ska-punk/Spider-Man fans may find some peace today. It has been speculated for years that the image associated with California band Operation Ivy, the outline of a mysterious man lunging forward, was inspired by Spider-Man comics. Now frontman Jesse Michaels has come forward with more information regarding the similarities.
Sunday, Michaels posted on Instagram that the jumping man, which was first seen on their 1988 Hectic EP, was most likely made with a comic image as a reference, specifically this December 1987 issue of Marvel Tales. He explained:
people keep asking me about this so I thought I would answer. The operation ivy, jumping man guy first appeared on the 7 inch and then later appeared on the album in silhouette form. On the 7 inch ("hectic ep") it had details, like a face and clothing and so on. People are asking me basically did I use this comic image as a reference? Well, it looks like it. I know I had a book called "how to draw Marvel comics". Aside from that I really do not remember. I was 17 years old and a lot of of the times I was high or otherwise dissociated. Thanks
