Right now, Queens Of The Stone Age are out on a big stadium tour with Foo Fighters, Mannequin Pussy, and Gouge Away. Last month, they released "Easy Street," a Nikki Lane collab with a beautifully ridiculous video, and frontman Josh Homme appeared on tracks from Shania Twain and Mastodon. As you have probably already surmised, QOTSA were in album rollout mode; they just weren't properly announcing it yet. Now, it's official. The new QOTSA album is called Perfecth, and it's out this fall.
Do you get the title? You get it, right? Because it's like "Perfect," except spelled and pronounced imperfectly? I will have to copy-paste that word so many times in the months ahead. Can't wait. The band actually already announced the album's release via comedy skit; it's just that they intentionally announced the wrong release date. This particular comedy bit, posted on Instagram last week, is quite gruesome, and you can see it for yourself below.
Now, QOTSA have announced the impending release of Perfecth with a different comedy skit. They're really leaning into this thing. When I hit play, I figured I was about to watch a music video. No! It's a little fable about the perils of adopting a dog, and it stars Josh Homme alongside Ruby Homme, Max Homme, Pumpkin Van Leeuwen, Isabella Puppolini (Izzy) Van Leeuwen, Reesa Shuman, and a freaky-looking puppet. So there is an album behind all of this. We can talk about that part of it now. Josh Homme co-produced Perfecth with bandmate Michael Shuman, and it's apparently inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, assembled from a number of sessions in a few different cities in the years since 2023's In Times New Roman... In a press release, Homme says, "Every song sounds like it's from a different world, and that's on purpose, because it's trying to stitch together all these emotions revolving around love, lust, foolishness, and the sort of wisdom that comes as a gift from all that."
With the album announcement, QOTSA unveil their new single "Insignificant Other," a funky-bluesy groove with a whole lot of organ and with Josh Homme really working his upper register. Homme says, "It's a song about distance, about how someone can be your entire world only to simply vanish. And about the strange vertigo of being on the receiving end of that."
