You remember the scene. At least, I hope you remember the scene. It's hard to forget it. Mad Men. Season five. Episode nine. Michael Ginsberg, a young copywriter at Cooper Draper Price, has an ad pitch all ready to go, but his boss Don Draper humiliatingly dumps his idea and successfully sells his own idea instead. On the long elevator ride back to the office, Ginsberg gets more and more pissed off as Draper blithely brushes him off. As the doors open, Ginsberg mutters, "I feel bad for you." Draper, missing no beats, replies, "I don't think about you at all" as he leaves the elevator. Boom. One of the coldest lines in prestige TV history.
There is zero evidence that Angela Autumn is quoting Mad Men on her new single "I Don't Think About You At All," and anyway she delivers that line very differently. The Nashville-based country-folk musician will release her new album Believer next month, and we already posted her songs "Mountain Stream" and "Heavy Tobacco." "I Don't Think About You At All" is a tender ramble with a tone that suggests that she probably does think about this person — enough to write a song about it, anyway. Here's what she says about it:
Very similar to "Mountain Stream," this song was me integrating some deeper traumas and writing about them. I truly feel that we see ourselves most clearly through our creations, and this song helped me heal a side of myself that needed special attention. It started out as a banjo drone song with just a riff played on the lower string. I showed my ex the demo (who the song was written about), and he said yeah it’s like Chini Baba, and his response kind of led me to want to record the song.
