On this day in 2001, Apple launched the gadget that enabled our music geekery to escalate to unprecedented levels. After that day, the subways, sidewalks, and school halls of Every City, USA were populated by a new class of pedestrian: the glassy-eyed MP3 zombie, readily identified via standard, white earbuds and detachment from immediate environs. In other words, it's five years to the day since life got awesome.
Think that the iPod has been good for your lifestyle? Get a load of how it's been for Apple. The NY Post reports that there has been an increase of approximately 800% in stock price (from $9 to $79 a share on a "post-split basis"), and $7.7 billion in sales of 39.4 million iPods. And the party ain't over!An analyst estimates that Apple will sell 111 million iPods (for $18.7 billion) in sales over the next two years.
Those are massive numbers, so we're wondering: How many of those 39.4 million iPods went to you alone? Count us among the suckers that have had nearly every memory size in every version, 'cause it just wouldn't be American not to buy-and-replace with unmitigated fervor. Anything more than three a year, though, and you have issues.
