When posting about WAVVES, aka the one-man project of 22-year-old San Diego-based Nathan Williams, in The Outsiders, I made the caveat that "he seems like he's ready to explode from the starter gate" via two new records -- one upcoming on De Stijl Fat Possum, one already out on Woodsist -- "and a groundswell of buzz (and his own knack for melody, the current fascination with DIY culture, etc)." The point was that, in general, ears are adventurous these days (OK, too many people still can't parse another higher profile band like Black Dice, but that's their loss). WAVVES and hisfuzzed-out 4-track skate-pop/punk might have remained a curiosity even a couple of years ago, but with the New York Times feature ascension of Animal Collective and Gang Gang Dance to Late Night with No Age to whatever, it doesn't take a scientist (or blogger) to tell you he has the just-strange-enough ingredients -- as well as the boyish charm -- to put him on a much bigger stage in 2009. Thoughts? Take a listen to "Gun In The Sun" and please note WAVVES warming his own guns in the sun in the above picture.

In case you missed these the first time, here are a couple more nuggets. "California Goth" comes from the Woodsist collection, "So Bored" from Fat Possum's.

WAVVVES, from whence we nabbed "Gun In The Sun," is out 3/17 via Fat Possum. Keep up on sounds and tour dates at MySpace. Remember, Randy Randall really digs him.
