Le1f – “Coins”
Greedhead rapper Le1f garnered a lot of attention in 2012 for his mixtape Dark York — which landed at No. 38 on Tom’s Top 40 Rap Releases of 2012 — and particularly its deep-throated, lead single “Wut.” What I loved about Dark York was Le1f’s tendency toward experimentation with sound and beats while maintaining the same kind of braggadocio you expect from a standard issue rap release. But so many of the knockout punchlines were obscured by how deep he chose to master his vocals. With “Coins,” the first track from his upcoming mixtape Fly Zone, we get a super crisp Le1f, spewing the same kinds of eviscerating, insanely clever wordplay he mastered on York coming through crystal clear. Check out the Drippin & Souldrop-produced cut below.
Fly Zone is out 1/28 on Greedhead and Camp & Street.
