Watch Grimes Talk Fashion At The Met’s Punk Gala
Indie Twitter was a-grumble last night as reports and photos from the Met Gala were unveiled. For those who don’t know, the Met Gala is a celebration of a massive annual fashion-themed exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art’s Costume Institute. This year’s is punk. Naturally, subculture co-option is a sensitive subject for many, but two of the most important tenets of punk are style-innovation and not giving a fuck. This poses a potential snake-swallowing-its-own-tail scenario when commenting on it. Grimes was one of the guests at the Gala and, as always, when speaking about the exhibition and the night, she was poised and introspective. Wearing Chanel, Grimes commented punk “wasn’t about a rejection of fashion” and with so much of its style origins rooted to Sex Pistols-founder Malcolm McLaren and designer Vivienne Westwood, it’s hard not to agree. Watch Grimes talk about her relationship with Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld, as well as fashion, design, and the Met exhibition below.
