Learn How Your HIStory CD Got Made In This Awkward Corporate Video Made For Michael Jackson In 1995
In 1995, Michael Jackson released the double album HIStory: Past, Present And Future, Book 1, a new album paired with a greatest-hits collection. Its marketing rollout was grand and overblown — BusinessWeek reported that Sony spent some $30 million marketing it — which meant that it could sell seven million copies in the U.S. alone and still be understood as a flop. The album is generally regarded as the moment where Jackson’s musical career went off the rails for good, even though that album absolutely had some jams on it. And right now, a fascinating video about the album’s manufacturing is making the internet rounds. In the nine-minute clip, various Sony processing plant employees talk about the process that goes into the actual physical creation of the CDs. And since all of the CD-plant types address Jackson directly, it’s entirely possible that Sony made this video just for Michael Jackson and nobody else. With its stilted delivery and its mid-’90s normal-people fashion, the whole thing feels like a Tim & Eric sketch. Check it out below.
