Pharrell – “Smile”
Pharrell’s G I R L came out in Japan this week with a lovely bonus track called “Smile.” Just a clicking drum machine, a few piano plunks, and a couple of synth blares accompany Pharrell’s smooth voice as he spreads more of the good vibes that came with “Happy.” Speaking of that huge hit, the hitmaker recently revealed in an interview with Howard Stern that the song was originally recorded by CeeLo Green, but “the powers that be” nixed it:
[Cee Lo] wanted to do it … and he did do it. He sounded amazing on it. He burns my version. But, how do I say this diplomatically? The powers that be, at the time, did not see it fit for him. Some folks on his team just felt that the priority should be on [his album CeeLo’s Magic Moment], so they elected not to do that song.
