Julia Holter has announced a new double-A-side 7-inch featuring a pair of covers, one brand new and one previously released. The old one is “Hello Stranger,” originally a 1963 hit for Barbara Lewis but reimagined by Holter as a captivating tone poem/torch song on last year’s Loud City Song. The new selection is “Don’t Make Me Over,” culled from the same era but presented in a significantly different style. The Burt Bacharach/Hal David composition was originally a hit for Dionne Warwick in 1962, and Holter’s take maintains some of that ’60s pop-R&B flair, blooming from muted, bassy jazz into choral and symphonic splendor without compromising Holter’s restrained yet evocative vocal presence. It’s a powerful piece of work that honors the original without merely replicating it. Listen to both tracks from the single below.
