War On Drugs: Benji Is “Such A Beautiful Record”
The feud between the War On Drugs and Sun Kil Moon has been long and weird; it probably hit its lowest point with this bullshit. It’s easy to imagine the beef heating up as year-end list season approaches its apex and their (great) respective albums fight it out for top spots. But in a recent interview, War On Drugs frontman Adam Granduciel has extended something resembling an olive branch. He’s never been the aggressor in this particular conflict, and at least musically, he’s an admirer of Sun Kil Moon mastermind Mark Kozelek. Here’s what he had to say about Sun Kil Moon’s truly great 2014 album Benji:
I listened to [Benji] a lot while we were on tour. I thought it was such a beautiful record, weird and cool and great. I haven’t listened to it since this whole thing between us started, but I probably could if I tried really hard. It would be pretty high in my list of albums of the year. I don’t really know what his problem is. He’s probably just trying to have a little fun. Maybe there’s some comfort in being a little bit of an outsider.

Two things: (1) He’s absolutely right, and (2) it’s cool that he can be that sanguine after Kozelek has made such public sport of him.
