We don’t know if it’s an album or a mixtape. And we don’t know if it’s an homage to Lil Wayne, a work of pure Lil Wayne disrespect, or somehow both. But Young Thug is going ahead with plans to release a new project called Tha Carter 6 before the feuding-with-his-label Wayne gets a chance to release Tha Carter V. Last night, a pair of new tracks showed up online, both with beats from the Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1 producer London On Da Track. “Beat It,” which has nothing to do with Michael Jackson, is a woozy sex-drunk half-sung fucking song with an assist from the singer Jacquees. And “Halftime,” which has nothing to do with Nas, is a weightless brag-rap bugout and a clear example of what Young Thug does better than anyone else. I will be very happy with a whole album’s worth of songs like these, whenever it arrives. Listen to both below.
