E-40 – “California” (Feat. Dam-Funk & Ariel Pink)
We’ve heard a couple of great songs already from the Alchemist and Oh No’s Welcome To Los Santos: “Play It Cool,” Gangrene’s collab with Earl Sweatshirt and Samuel T. Herring, and “Lock & Load,” Killer Mike and MNDR’s glitter-and-tar savagery. (We selected the latter as one of the week’s five best songs.) Now, the entire album is available to stream. The record is technically a soundtrack for Grand Theft Auto V, but it seems to have morphed into this microscopic zoom-in on west coast weirdo talent (and friends!). One of the other standouts is the track that sees the legendary Bay Area rapper E-40 going head-to-head with lackadaisical LA pop weirdo Ariel Pink on “California” — somehow they balance each other perfectly. The record also features Tunde Adebimpe, Popcaan, Wavves, Ab-Soul, and many, many more. Listen to the whole thing here, and check “California” below.
